My friend Fawn and I decided to meet up in Chicago this past weekend for a mini college reunion. We met at college when I was living in Minneapolis and we both attended The Institute of Production and Recording. We hadn’t seen each other in three years and finally decided to meet half way (I live in NY and she lives in Minnesota). We had a fun filled weekend touring all the sights and eating our hearts out!
Bang Bang Pie and BiscuitsÂ
On our last beautiful sunny day in the city, we drove out to the Logan Square neighborhood to try a raved about restaurant named, Bang Bang Pie and Biscuits. This adorable little restaurant features Midwestern service, “always served with a smile”, and fresh farm to table cooking. You guessed it, they mainly only sell pie and biscuits and they do so for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Luckily for me, Pie and Biscuits are two of my favorite things!
As we strolled into Bang Bang Pie, we approached the counter. Up on the wall is a chalk board looking menu featuring Biscuits, Grits, Pies, Granola and Drinks. They even had vegetarian and vegan friendly options. Everything on the menu sounded so delicious, I wish we could have tried them all.
All the employees behind the counter greeted us as we walked in. Each one of them were friendly and attentive, making the restaurant feel warm and inviting. Light upbeat music played and there were many people sipping coffee and reading the paper while having a slice of pie.
Your probably wondering, “How did they ever come up with such a name?” They actually got the idea from Nancy Sinatra’s song, “Bang Bang”. Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits has two locations now, the one in Logan Square and one in Ravenswood. It’s had the same owner since day one about 6 years ago when they found there was a need for pie shops in the area. While we were there, we met with Trish, the Director of Catering, Wholesale, and Events. She drives all over the city selling their pies at local farmers markets, events like Pitchfork, and to other restaurants in the area. Many restaurants in and around the city order pies from Bang Bang Pie and Biscuits to serve at their own restaurants. Bang Bang Pie is a favorite in Chicago and not to mention, everything is made from scratch and the ingredients are provided by local farmers.
Even their tea is locally sourced! We ordered the hot green tea and sweetened it with their local orange honey at their “coffee and tea bar”.
After speaking with Trish, we had a good idea what to order based on her recommendations. When we placed our order, we moved to sit out in their “Pie Garden”. The backyard of the building is filled with picnic tables for their customers to eat outside. The Pie Garden is also dog friendly and fenced in.
We decided to order biscuits first. I ordered the Pimento biscuit and Fawn ordered the BLT biscuit. The biscuits are served fresh out of the oven, warm and fluffy, made from their Grandma’s recipe. The Pimento biscuit is garnished with Pimento cheese, candied bacon, seasonal jam, and pickles.
The BLT biscuit, which just replaced the Bacon biscuit on the menu, is one of their newer menu items featuring delicious and fresh tomatoes, bacon, lettuce, herbed aioli, and pickles. I’m not a fan of tomatoes, but those tomatoes on the BLT were the best I’ve ever had. They actually made me like tomatoes.
Next we decided to order some pie of course. No meal is complete without pie. We couldn’t make up our mind, so we got some special treatment and received a pie flight! These pie flights aren’t available to everyday customers. Although, they put together pie flights for customers deciding what to order for their weddings or special events. On this pie flight, we sampled: Chocolate Pudding, Cookies & Cream, Apricot Blueberry, Cherry Limeade, Key Lime, and Honey.
As you can see, each pie was very different, yet so delicious. It was hard to decide which was our favorite! If I had to choose, it would be a tie between the Chocolate Pudding and the Honey pie. The Chocolate Pudding was rich and sweet with whipped cream on top and a homemade graham cracker crust. The Honey pie had baked honey custard in a graham crust with blueberries on top.
Fawn’s favorite was the Cookies & Cream pie with it’s vanilla custard, chocolate cookie crust and crumble garnish. Their Key Lime pie was as if I had traveled to Sanibel Island. They’ve perfected this recipe to be comparable to the famous Key Lime pies you would find in Florida. Their fruit pie of the season, Apricot Blueberry, was to die for. Their fruit is fresh and locally sourced as is each item on their menu. Therefore, this pie will change almost every month to compliment whats in season. One day it could be apricots & blueberries, the next it could be strawberry & rhubarb pie.
With that being said, due to the fact that Bang Bang Pie and Biscuits receive all their ingredients fresh from local farmers, their menu changes from month to month. I find this can make a restaurant more exciting because you will always try something new!
As we left with our bellies very full, we checked out at the counter and both bought coffee mugs as souvenirs. If you buy their coffee mugs, they will give you coffee or tea to go! Â
I’d like to give a huge thank you to Trish and her team at Bang Bang Pie and Biscuits for an amazing time and incredible food. It was such a wonderful and unique experience to try a place you’d only find in Chicago! I do know from now on, I will never be able to just drive through Chicago on our travels. I will be making a point to stop at Bang Bang Pie! In fact, I really wish I had some pie right now! Writing this has made me recall just how flavorful everything was. I wonder if they would ship to New York? 🙂
