Charleston is a city full of restaurants with dishes ranging from Southern Comfort to Seafood, Barbecue, and more! No matter how many times you travel to Charleston, you will always have the opportunity to try somewhere new. You’ll never run out of places to eat. Below is an example of a Foodie’s Weekend Tour of Charleston exploring all of Charleston Restaurants based on some of the places we’ve personally tasted. As you will see, there is a strong emphasis on the great BBQ of Charleston!
Friday evening: Saltwater Cowboys
Before spending all your time in downtown, you owe it to yourself and your palate to hop on over to Shem Creek. Shem Creek is this adorable little boardwalk with restaurants that will give you a nice view of the water and sunsets.
One of the restaurants with those beautiful views is Saltwater Cowboys. This fun spot offers a two level dining area with plenty of windows as well as a bar area. Their menu features a wide variety of BBQ and Seafood choices. I had their smoked wings and fried okra and loved it! Next time, I would probably try their pulled pork tacos.
Saturday morning: Toast!
Toast! is by far my favorite breakfast joint of all time. We’ve tried both Toast! of Summerville and Toast! of Charleston and they are both equally a good time and an amazing breakfast spot no matter what time of day it is. Their biscuits are bigger than my fist – paired with their gravy, they are to die for! They feature the South’s famous open faced omelets and seafood po-boys. Not only do they have breakfast food, but they have lunch and dinner respectively. But, I definitely suggest the breakfast! Read more on our previous post: Summerville’s Best Breakfast Stops.
Saturday evening: Hymans Seafood
So, we skipped lunch only because from having such a big brunch at Toast!, you may want to continue throughout the day sightseeing and go for an early dinner – like we did. Hymans Seafood is located right on Meeting Street near all the hustle and bustle of Charleston. It’s rated one of the top seafood joints in the city and you can see all the celebrities that have visited there by looking at signed photographs on the walls of the restaurant. It’s two stories with a bar on both floors. We ate on the first floor, as the second floor seems to be for parties or busier nights. I don’t eat seafood, so I had their BBQ of course and it was really good. So if you aren’t a fish eater, but your significant other is – have no fear, they have many delicious plates to satisfy your needs. After dinner, stop by their gift shop for their souvenirs.
Saturday evening dessert: Kaminsky’s Dessert Café
Kaminsky’s Dessert Café is located right next to the City Market on Market Street. Personally, I didn’t have a chance to go there – but I wanted to. Their menu sounded amazing. As you might have guessed, this place only serves dessert – it sounds like a dream! Dessert drinks, pies, cupcakes, and more. It’s cozy atmosphere paired with a rotating selection of delectable desserts sounds just like the perfect place for a night cap.
Sunday morning: Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit
In the City Market you will come upon a little place called, Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. They are open for breakfast, although it may be difficult to find a place to sit because the market is always busy. Their biscuits are famous in Charleston and they have delicious looking biscuit egg sandwiches. Perfect for when you are wanting to walk and shop the city market with some food on the go.
Sunday lunch: Swig & Swine
Before leaving Charleston, if you feel like you haven’t had enough BBQ or Seafood – you must stop by Swig and Swine. Not far out of the center of downtown, Swig and Swine does not disappoint. There are multiple locations – we went to the one in Summerville. The night we went they had their special wing night. Their smoked wings were the best wings I’ve ever had. They have plenty of sauces to compliment every dish as well. And their banana pudding still makes my mouth water. What’s BBQ without banana pudding?!
If after reading this post, you are even more interested about the food in and around Charleston – you should check out one of their Food Tours. Spend a day trying the cuisine of the city with Charleston Food Tours.
*”I must apologize for listing a few places and then only talking about their BBQ. As I lived in Nashville, it became customary to have amazing BBQ paired with Okra and Banana Pudding. Moving to New York, you just can’t find good BBQ, let alone BBQ joints that sell and make Okra and Banana Pudding! It is such a disappointment. So now, whenever I’m in the South – I binge.” – Crystal
Ooohhh Charleston is definitely on my bucket list — looks like a great time!
Hi Marie!
